Safety Protocols for Human Holidays has been on my to-be-read pile for months, ever since it placed first in its category at the Rainbow Awards. I finally got around to reading it, and it’s adorable.
As a security officer on an interspecies ship, Growlan Raskli’s experienced in heading off species-specific aberrant behaviors in order to keep the peace. But when her captain asks her to find out what’s bothering their sole human crew member, Raskli’s out of her depths. She hardly knows anything about humans and she’s not a psych doctor.
Something’s definitely upset Human Jen, something to do with human holidays. The more time Raskli spends studying humans and interacting with the intriguing Human Jen, the more personal the assignment becomes. Determined to lift the dark cloud from Human Jen, Raskli will do whatever it takes—within safe parameters, of course.
The story is told entirely from the point of view of Growlan Raskli, who is trying to figure out why Human Jen is sad. What starts as a begrudged task assigned by her superiors quickly develops into feelings.
Those feelings cause Growlan Raskli just a couple problems while she tries to figure out Human culture. Well, a few problems might also come from the limited amount of information available about Humans…
This is the cutest, sweetest book I have read in quite a while. There’s a little bit of angst, but it’s mostly of the pining variety. There is way more fun in this book than angst.
It can be yours for $2.99 USD or equivalent from the links below. It’s definitely worth the three bucks.
