Flash Fic: Cats gonna cat

Lovely shadows. So dark. So thick. So malicious.

Such purrrr-fect accomplices.

I stalked. Through, between, and under. Dust ground under my paws.

I froze. There. Just ahead. The scuff of feet against wood.

I listened closely, calculating exactly where my prey was. Close. Not close enough.

I slunk forward, peering around the corner. Yes. There he was.

I gathered myself against the ground, angling my body and bracing my feet just so. It would be the perfect attack. Flawless.

My tail swished. My whiskers twitched.

With a bloodcurdling scream I launched myself around the corner and across the small space separating us. My prey shrieked and tried to run, but I had him firmly in my grasp. I wrapped my front legs around him and kicked with my back feet. My sharp teeth  tore viciously into my prey’s leg.

He stumbled. Fell to the ground. Victory!

Suddenly, a large hand gripped my neck. Impossibly large. I found myself moving through the air until I hung, limp, in front of my prey’s annoyed face.

“Goddammit, Jasper, we talked about this! No sneak attacks until after I change.”

I blinked innocently.

“You almost ruined another pair of slacks, you asshole.”

“Mar,” I told him, trying to sound cute.

He sighed in disgust and put me down. “You’re so cooking tonight.”

“Meear?”

“Meow my ass. I’m going to shower and try to wash away the memory of screaming like a five-year-old and falling on my ass. Again.” He stomped out of the kitchen and down the hall to the bedroom.

I sat on the linoleum and groomed my paw. That had been very satisfactory. One of the best screams I’d gotten out of him yet. I probably should have remembered about his work clothes, though. I really had meant to; I had just gotten excited and forgot to wait.

I stood and padded after him. He’d left the bedroom door open for me, so he couldn’t be that pissed off. He wasn’t immediately visible, but I could hear water running in the master bath so I headed that way.

He was already in the shower. I sat on the bath matt, strategically placing myself so that I could peek around the edge of the shower curtain he hadn’t closed all the way. No matter what shape I was, watching water and soap rush over all that lovely skin and muscle was an indulgence not to be missed.

He opened his eyes and looked straight at me. “Are you coming in or not, oh mighty hunter?”

Annoyed but not pissed. Excellent. I yawned and stretched. And stretched.

I stepped into the shower and wrapped my arms around him. “Sorry, baby,” I said, kissing his cheek. “I didn’t mean to forget about the clothes.”

“I know. Asshole. You know I hate shopping.”

“I do know that. I’ll grill some steak?”

“Mmmm. And garlic bread. And potatoes with peppers.”

I laughed. My man drove a hard bargain. I got some shampoo and started massaging it into his scalp. “It’s a deal. Am I forgiven?”

He purred and stretched under my hands then leaned forward to kiss me. “I suppose.”

I grinned.

He frowned. “I don’t know what you’re thinking right now, but no. Whatever it is, you’re not forgiven that much.”

I grinned wider before I pressed my mouth against his neck, making his breath catch. We’d see about that.
